Built for the View: You’ll Love Our EcoHut, the Best Seats in the House

There’s a reason so many architects, designers, and travel writers have fallen in love with Kimo Estate’s EcoHut. Perched high on our Gundagai hilltops, these award-winning structures are more than just a place to rest your head—they are a masterclass in minimalism, sustainability, and spatial harmony. And none embody this more than the original, JR’s Hut.

Architecture That Frames the Landscape

When we first envisioned the ecohuts, we didn’t start with a floorplan—we started with the view.

Our intention was to create something that worked itself into the landscape, while also embracing it. That meant using natural materials, clean lines, and a design that let the outside in. With JR’s, the structure’s sharply pitched roof, timber cladding, and floor-to-ceiling glass make you feel completely immersed in the rolling hills and ever-changing skies of the Murrumbidgee.

You don’t just see the view—you live in it. Whether you’re lying in bed, cooking dinner, or soaking in the hot tub under the stars, the outside world is your ever-present companion.

Less Really Is More

JR’s Hut (and its sister structures, Fergo’s and Sweeney’s) follow a principle of intentional simplicity. They’re compact but never cramped. Warm but never overdone. Inside, every detail has been considered— from the positioning of the bed to catch the morning light, to the crackling fireplace in the corner that takes the edge off those cool country nights.

This isn’t luxury defined by excess. It’s luxury defined by restraint—where space, silence, and sustainability take centre stage.

Sustainable Design Without Compromise

All our ecohuts are 100% off-grid. They run on solar power and are built to withstand Gundagai’s seasonal extremes without reliance on the grid. But that doesn’t mean giving up comfort. Each hut has been designed to be thermally efficient and low maintenance, allowing for creature comforts like a hot shower, gas cooking, and toasty heating—without sacrificing our sustainable principles.

It’s this balance—between design, comfort, and sustainability—that has made JR’s Hut a feature in numerous architectural journals and travel magazines.

The Most Photographed EcoHut in the Country? Probably.

JR’s has become something of an icon. It has graced the pages of ArchDailyDesignboom, and The Local Project. It’s been on the bucket lists of urban escapees, design lovers, and eco-conscious travellers from around Australia and the world.

But despite the attention, it remains true to its original purpose: a quiet, beautiful place to just be. A place to unplug and recharge the soul.

Whether you’re here for a special occasion, a creative reset, or simply to soak in the stillness, you’ll quickly understand why this little hut on a hill has captured so many hearts.

Come See It for Yourself

At Kimo Estate, we believe in creating spaces that enhance the land rather than dominate it. Our ecohuts are a reflection of that belief. They are shelters, sanctuaries, and snapshots of rural Australia at its best.

JR’s, Fergo’s and Sweeney’s don’t shout—they whisper. And sometimes, a whisper in the right place says everything.
